Christmas tree plantation at Rancho San Pancho

Our Story.

Rancho San Pancho Foundation

The history of Rancho San Pancho

The Matlatzinca people once occupied a wide territory in pre-Hispanic times. Today, their population has declined; an estimated 1,500 Matlatzinca people live across Mexico, in San Francisco Oxtotilpan, in the municipality of Temascaltepec, State of Mexico. The community faces challenges in keeping its native language alive as younger generations are increasingly led to abandon it.

In 1998, facing the difficult pace of life and pollution in Mexico City, our founder, Leonardo Josafat Reyes López, moved his family to Temascaltepec in search of a calmer, healthier life. There he founded Rancho San Pancho to help care for the environment by planting and cultivating different tree species and creating jobs for people in the local community.

Mission

At Rancho San Pancho, we work to protect and improve the environment. We help replenish aquifers and purify the air by growing Christmas trees on land that was once eroded, creating a natural temperature regulator in the Valley of Mexico.

Vision

Preserve the legacy of our land through ecological activities that help the Foundation grow and reach more people.

How we do it

Each year, Christmas tree sales help fund the Foundation. The trees are pruned rather than cut at the root, allowing them to keep growing and produce new shoots over time. We also reforest land, lead environmental awareness activities in schools and businesses, and host cultural and community events to raise donations and support the sale of local organic products in Mexico City and the State of Mexico.
